Porsche GT4: First Look

Is this the Porsche that finally beats the 911? People said the 928 with its V8 or the 944 Turbo would run with the 911, but they never really did. And here we are again 30 years later with the GT4.

It's faster than the 911. The GT4 knocks it out in 4.2 seconds, .1 seconds faster than the 911. It also ran a 7:40-second around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Same time as the 2011 911 GT3, and just eight seconds slower than a 605-hp Carrera GT. The GT4 Cayman definitely runs with the 911.

But it make sense becuase the 3.8-liter flat six is basically a detuned 911 Carrera S engine. But eve even so, the GT4 reaches 60mph slightly faster – .01 seconds. While the GT4 will still get dynamic engine mounts and other fancy bits, it will only come in a 6 speed transmission. Top speed is 183.

The Cayman GT4 sits 30 millimeters lower and comes standard with steel disc brakes. Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes (PCCB) are optional and $$$$. It rides on five-lug wheels rather than the center-lock wheels standard on the 911 GT3. They had to find someway to charge less than a GT3!

The interior is standard Porshce but the “custom” Sport Chrono Package that features a Track Precision app sounds cool.

The GT4 will make its first official public appearance at the Geneva International Motor Show in early March. US dealerships will start receiving the cars in July. You need $84,600.
