Article Basics

Thanks for writing an article for Build Race Party. You’re free to write about anything you want that involves cars or even things we do as car people. Obviously most to the stories will be about car builds, adventures, and races but it can be anything as long as its fun to read or informative. Like maybe you stop by breweries on road trips and want to write a review. Or you have a favorite hotel you stay at when you visit a racetrack. I think you get the idea but the key is to write whatever makes you happy. So you can ignore the next few paragraphs and write

WRITING STYLE
I ask that you keep your writing informal. This isn’t the NY Times and I think it makes an article easier to read. That means you can use any style or voice. I personally prefer the voice in my head. I like to write as if I’m talking to a friend. I let my mind talk and then simply type as I hear it. But obviously you need to write in your style.

Another thing to consider is what the article sounds like outloud. Can you walk into a bar and read your article to someone or will they yell at you and hit you the moment you start reading it? What that means is its better to start an article the way you would open a conversation with a friend in a bar. “Did you see Loeb’s run up Pikes Peak? He CRUSHED it!” or “Why do people stance cars? They handle like crap and look pretty stupid too.”

What I’m trying to avoid is the writing they taught to us in school. Things like “As the sun rose over the glistening racetrack in northern Wisconsin, we awoke to roaring engines and bustling excitement of the day ahead…” Just tell it how it is. “I love waking up at racetracks. When it’s perfect, the first think you hear are the race engines.”

Going forward we are going to save the top slider for original content or anything that is really huge news.
